Treats ideas for dogs

Can you all help my ma out with a recommendation?

I know everyone has their own idea of what is good for their dog,
but I have to consider what is good for Astro.

I am looking for a small to medium treat that is not hard,
or crunchy. We purchase treats thinking Astro will like them
because they are salmon, duck, liver or chicken, he turns
them down. What is a good soft chew, that is healthy made in USA
no corn wheat or all that other nasty stuff? I have so many bags of
crunchy treats I am feeding it to the birds and yes the squirrels too.
Ok let's hear what your ideas are.

oooooohhhhhhhh I can't really help with this one; all I know is that my angel Jade (who was similar size and had equally strong jaws) loved here large milkbone biscuits on some occasions and then raw-hide chews on other occasions... and then she would wait as good as gold til the rotis were done (Indian flatbreads!). Boy did she lover her rotis. They are made with atta, which is an ancient grain, wholewheat and stone ground. She never had any itchy trubs. As you say, though, that was my individual dog. Finding what each likes is akin to getting kids to eat balanced and healthy!!!

Perhaps I could suggest another approach? Maybe for a while, don't offer treats at all - even nibbles of human treats, or especially those, as they can become too much of a distraction and desire. Dogs in nature did not have treats - and in fact one meal a day was about it. After a couple of weeks, you might appear to remember, "oh we've got treats here Astro!", and offer only one. If it gets rejected, put it back and don't offer alternatives. Just leave him to think about it. Next day, 'remember' again and offer the same treat. It might take another couple of times of this, but eventually it will twig to him that if there are to be treats at all, they are to be on human terms and not dog's!!!

This is how I trained Jade that they really were "treats" and not all-day dining. As she got older, I would offer down the two different varieties (in their containers) and let her pick which one she wanted that day. Sometimes there would be a whole week of one only - other times it would change daily. Quite entertaining!

anyhoo.... that's my thoughts, which may or may not be of any use whatsoever, but it was fun to remember my darling! Hugs. YAM xx

    1. Thank You.
      We appreciate your input.
It was fun to hear your point of view with
      memories of Jade.

  2. First-thank you for our generous gift! Love everything. You are not going to believe this but, we love all treats, but our favorite is mini-milkbones
    Lily & Edward

  3. We eat anything that isn't nailed down but one of our favorite companies is Blue Dog Bakery. They seem to have a wide variety of cookies - soft ones, hard ones, big ones and small ones.

  4. WE would suggest going to the CHEWY.COM site and clicking on TREATS tab. They have GOOD descriptions of what the Snacks are Made From...WHERE they are Made.. and what TEXTURE they are. They sell 87,000 varieties.. and we are SURE you will find THE RIGHT ONE.. to fit your needs, Astro.

  5. My pup is kind of the same way, I think he just gets bored of treats easily. Have you tried the "Blue Buffalo Blue Bits"? They're tender beef dog treats, all natural, soft and extremely tasty, made with the finest natural ingredients, have no chicken (or poultry) by-product meals, and are corn, wheat and soy free. Give them a try!
Check if you can find a smaller bag, to see if Astro likes them! Also, dont forget that you can donate the food/treats Atro doesnt like to your local shelter :)

Hope you find the right treats for Atro! Happy Holidays!

  6. We don't do hard crunchy treats either. Wellness brand has soft varieties and the pugs like Zukes treats also.
    Mr Bailey, Hazel & Mabel

  7. All treats are natural are pawsome, but I really like freeze dried chicken. The best treats we recommend are Zuke's treats. We never not have these in our pantry they're so good!

  8. We like every treat we get so we don't really have any suggestions.

  9. OMD, isn't that funny ~ Ruby is kinda the same way. She has jaws of steel, and pawsome teeth, but she doesn't like hard treats! I am in love with Nature's Variety, especially the mixers (I use as treats) and the munchies and the biscuits she loves too. The downside is they can be pricey. Zukes are a better price point, but sometimes Ruby turns her nose up at those after a while. Wellness is good, and they are reasonable for the most part. Good luck, and let us know what is a hit!
    Ruby (and Ma...☺)

  10. We like just about all treats, but we bet Astro would love the Wellness bites we just reviewed this week from They come in a variety of flavors and some of them are on sale. To be honest, our favorite treats are the ones Mom makes:)

    Woos - Lightning and Misty

  11. Like Mabel, Mr. Bailey and Hzel, we are big fans of Wellness and Zuke's!
    Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo

  12. The doggies in this house were never picky when it comes to treats. The old standard is milkbone marro snacks.

  13. Dakota's all time faves are Zukes...Zukes has minis...and he likes their "links" he adores them!

  14. I haf just had Zukes in my Christmas box from Dory and I can tell you they are TASTY!!!!!! Yum yum.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas
    Loves and licky kisses
